The famous flowerpot formations tower overhead, their sandstone bases narrow and worn smooth by centuries of tidal action, their tops still crowned with the spruce trees that somehow cling on through it all. People wander between them in flip-flops, necks craned, quietly reckoning with how small they are. There is nothing quite like the feeling of standing on the seabed that, in a few hours, will be under fifteen metres of water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe Hopewell Rocks on the shores of the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick are one of the most genuinely surprising natural wonders in Canada. The Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the world, rising and falling up to sixteen metres twice a day, and the Hopewell Rocks sit at the centre of that spectacle. At low tide you walk the ocean floor among the flowerpots. At high tide you kayak around them. The same rocks, the same spot, two completely different worlds separated by six hours and a vertical wall of water. The site is about forty minutes from Moncton and makes for an easy stop on any Maritime road trip, though getting the timing right is worth the planning. From the water, the rocks read differently, taller, more ancient, the spruce trees clinging to their tops suddenly level with the cliff edge behind.
