At its heart stands the Victorian gazebo, a graceful bandstand framed by towering trees, where the park opens toward the water and sailing boats drift quietly past on the Arm below. This sketch captures that scene, the gazebo in the foreground, sails catching the breeze on the glittering inlet, a moment of calm at the edge of a city with a deep and restless history.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePoint Pleasant was once a critical military position, its shoreline bristling with cannon batteries built to defend Halifax Harbour from naval attack. The Prince of Wales Tower, a Martello tower completed in 1798, still stands within the park, one of the oldest such structures in North America. The cannon emplacements that once commanded the Arm are now quiet, overtaken by forest and walking trails, but their presence is still felt in the landscape.
